News:
Chancellor Gordon Brown has announced an Increase in Landfill Tax by £8 Per Tonne, Per Year from April 1st 2008
From April 1st 2008 Landfill Tax will rise by £8 per year until at least 2010 - 2011.
Among a variety of new environmental measures introduced, Chancellor Gordon Brown has said in the Budget "To encourage Recycling, I will increase landfill tax by £8 per year up to 2011 from next April".
This means that Landfill tax will increase to £32 next year, from the current rate of £24. In 2009 Landfill tax could be £40 per tonne and potentially over £50 after 2011.
Landfill Tax operates at two rates: A standard rate of £24 (Increasing to £32) per tonne for active waste (substances that either decay or contaminate land - which includes household waste); and a lower rate of £2 (Increasing to £2.50 in April 2008) per tonne for inert materials.
Materials qualifying for the lower rate are rocks and soils, ceramics and concrete, unused minerals, furnace slags, ash and low-activity inorganic compounds and water. Calcium sulphate, calcium hydroxide and brine qualify only if they are disposed of in specific containers.

New Pre-treatment Legislation
From the 30th of October onwards, Pretreatment legislation requires you to separate and recycle a portion of your waste stream. Failing to do so will incur extra costs as your waste handler will have to do this for you before sending to landfill. Keep your waste costs to a minimum and contact us for a free site audit to
assess how a Mac-Fab Baler can
reduce your waste costs.

How Legislation effects you..
"Both Waste Prevention and recycling have a role to play in addressing climate change. For recycling, the figures produced as a result of our work to understand the environmental benefits of recycling clearly show that the current recycling activity is the same as taking 5 million cars off the road". - Wrap Chief Executive Liz Goodwin
As a society we are consuming natural resources at an unsustainable rate.
No longer is it acceptable to divert all waste to landfill and forget its existence, but now the emphasis must be on reducing - reusing and recycling.
Reducing waste is an important contributor to this goal, as each year businesses lose up to 5% of their annual turnover through avoidable waste. The simple solution is to cut down on the packaging we buy and produce, but this is not always possible and usually you may find yourself paying high waste collection costs because of bulky waste. A Mac-Fab baler can provide the best solution for this problem as is notable in our Waste Baler Section
Why Reduce Waste?
Landfill Tax will increase by £8 per year from 2008 until at least 2010 / 2011 to give greater financial; incentives for businesses to reduce, re-use and recycle waste. (From £24 now to £48 in 2010)
Waste collection costs increase depending on the volume of waste you have for disposal. Therefore, by reducing this in any way you can by simply not taking home packaging, reusing carrier bags or compacting waste material in a baler you will decrease the overall price of waste collections.
Not all waste will be allowed to be sent to landfill and so all individuals and businesses will have to take responsibility for their own waste and greater action will be taken to penalise those caught fly tipping and illegally dumping abroad.

Waste Strategy UK:
Producers will have to make products using more recycled materials and less newly
extracted raw materials. Designing products which are less wasteful and take responsibility for the environmental impact of their products throughout their life.
Retailers will have to reduce packaging, source and market products that are less wasteful and help consumers to be less wasteful.
Consumers - both businesses and individuals will have the opportunity to reduce their own waste , purchase products that generate less waste and reduce environmental impacts and separate their waste for recycling (use a multi chamber baler to separate waste)
Objectives and Targets
Key objectives of the Waste Strategy -
- decouple waste growth from economic growth and put more emphasis on waste prevention and re-use
- meet and exceed the Landfill Directive Diversion targets for biodegradable municipal waste in 2010
- Increase diversion from Landfill of non-municipal waste and secure better integration of treatment for municipal and non-municipal waste
- Increase recycling of resources and recovery of energy from residual waste using a mix of technologies
